Name game

We are expecting our fifth child in October. When we found out we very quickly agreed on a name: Molly. We both loved it, it was a very easy decision. In fact, it was the fastest we have ever come to agreement on a name for one of our kids. By far.

The Ultrasound tech ruined this perfect moment of spousal collaboration, however. Molly isn't a very good name for a boy.

As ecstatic as I am about having another boy it leaves us in a bit of a predicament. We cannot agree on any boy names. This is due in part to the fact that both of us only have lists of about 4 or 5 names that we even like, but our lists don't match up. The other problem is most of the names we like we don't love. We just like them.

I don't know why boy names are so hard for us. We both love a whole bunch of girl names, and have difficulty coming up with any boy names we think are even just ok.

We've had long discussions, made lists, etc... But I don't feel like we're any closer to coming to an agreement on a name than we were when started.

Brittney's top choice right now is Peter.

Mine is either Oscar or Otis.

I won't list all the names we dislike, I don't want to offend anyone, but if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to chime in. Also, has anybody else had any experience with having extreme difficulty agreeing on a name for one of your children?

Baby names are always tough. I always liked Peter. Oscar is better than Otis. I'll regret saying this if you do pick otis, but Every Otis I've known had a tail. :P

Ours were a little different--maybe why we never had a boyWe almost used Liam, Michael, Owain, and Fox, I also liked William, Phillip, James, and Collin. (richard Vetoed those last ones.)

Ugh! Tough situation. I like traditional names, like Sam. But not Bill or John. I have friends who have a kid named Wyeth, which is different, and not bad. Otis seems dog-like.

But Carrie, the dog theme goes well in our family. When we got Jack, when Scout was one, my cousins we got him from told us over and over, every time we saw them, that Scout was their dog's name. When we decided on Grace, we went and told Amy and they had just named their dog Gracie, which then changed to Desha (or however that is spelled). The same thing happened with Abi and Max, that time with my brother's dog. So Otis fits right in. I don't love it, but I do like Odee.

You would never choose the names we like except you may like Jude. We were going to name Ewan Jude but with Ash as a middle name Jude Ash sounded like Judas with a speech impediment. We decided on Tristan but he didn't look like it. We argued all the time over names. I liked Winter, he said, "too frigid." It went on for months.
Jeff wanted to name Carson Hill and said it was good for a boy and a girl. Erik suggests Airick. Jeff suggests Ringo which also goes well with your dog theme. Calista likes Jade. Carson says Jeffrey is her choice. Ewan suggests Pee-Wee Herman.

Angela, I especially like the Pee Wee Herman suggestion!

The first thing we do with a name is come up with any and ALL nicknames or rhymes that other kids might use. We kinda missed it with Mitch, can't really sing the Banana foe fana song, but it's a family name. Although Peter is not a bad name it is a common name for a specific boy part. Sometimes you just have to wait until they are born to see what they look like. That's what happened with Josh. Good Luck!!! There will always be people who don't like the name you choose. Your Mom told us she Hated the name Andy so Vaughn just said well it's a good thing he's not yours. Hopefully we won't be getting any more dogs and won't accidentally name it after your child.

Honestly I think Peter is a lot less commonly used as that particular euphemism now than it used to be. I really don't think kids use that at all anymore.
