Do Cafeterias Serve Real Food or Just Science Experiments?

I asked Scout how her school day was. She always says she can't remember, so I asked her what she ate for lunch since that is her favorite part of school (she says it's her favorite because she is always REALLY HUNGRY). Today she couldn't tell me what it was.

What did you eat for lunch?

Um, I don't know what it's called. It was on the bread like a hamburger but it's not hamburger. You know that blueish grey meat?

Uh, no, I don't. Was it chicken?

No, not chicken.

Hamburger?

No. It's kind of like tuna fish but it packed flat and it's not tuna fish.

Did it taste like fish?

No. It wasn't fish.

Did you like it?

Yeah.

I looked at the schedule and they were supposed to have mozzarella breadsticks or a turkey sandwich. I don't know which one she chose, but last I checked, neither of those are supposed to be blueish grey right? I think maybe I will start sending her to school with sack lunches more often.

Yeah, the school lunches are pretty bad, but my kids love them. Probably because it is fried stuff that they don't get at home. I always think..."I should start sending home lunches, it would be cheaper and healthier." But, then I don't....that would take effort on my part.

I actually like the turkey sandwiches, and I assure you, they aren't blue at all. The best sandwiches are the deli sandwiches. Those are good.

Those breadsticks are good, but they are more of a side dish.

But I'm not going to sit here and tell you that school lunch is healthy.

Yes, they do offer vegetables, and a few people take them. Those few people are called "The teachers who are too lazy to make a home lunch." The kids don't touch them. Sometimes the kids will eat the fruit, though.

In fact, there are many times I see kids throw out a whole sandwich and just eat the chips and/or dessert that comes with it.

Scout likes a few of the school lunches. She did like the sandwich yesterday and she likes the baked potato. Scout isn't a fried food person and she won't eat any of the grilled sandwiches because she says they are slimy. The days we have to send something with her so she doesn't just end up eating the milk, banana, and dessert are the days they serve nachos and the penne pasta. She gets tired of having chocolate milk everyday. If they would give her a water bottle, I am sure she would get that instead.

Maybe it was a turkey salad sandwich?

The grilled cheese- they're okay. They're prepackaged, so the consistency is a little weird.
